99 Days of Summer

Rain, rain, go away. Come again another day. Oh but, the forecast calls for another rainy week. Here are some indoor activities to keep the little ones occupied.

July 29: Open the windows and listen to the rain. If you have children who are nervous about storms, tell them about thunder and why it makes noise.

July 30: Homemade play dough is simple to make. Mix 1 ½ cups of flour, ½ cup of salt, 1 teaspoon of cooking oil and 2 teaspoons of cream of tartar together in a bowl. Have a grown-up helper take 1 cup of boiling water (and add a few drops of food coloring, if desired, to the hot water), then carefully pour the water into the bowl of dry ingredients and stir well. Let the play dough cool for a few minutes, and then roll the dough out on a flat surface.

July 31: Buy fresh flowers, some to share with a friend who could use some cheer, and some for your own kitchen table.

Aug. 1: In honor of Harry Potter’s birthday, read a book, watch a movie, or search the internet for one of the many butter beer recipes available.

Aug. 2: Celebrate National Ice Cream Sandwich Day, today, by grabbing a box at your local grocer, or making your own. Either purchase chocolate chip cookies (or bake your own), fill with softened ice cream, re-freeze until the sandwich solidifies, then enjoy. Best when shared with friends.

Aug. 3: National Watermelon Day is Aug. 3, so celebrate by indulging with this watery superfood.

Aug. 4: Plan a family movie night. Let your children choose a favorite movie (or even two). Make popcorn. Light candles. Turn off electronic devices so everyone can be focused and present.
