Friends School of Baltimore Announces New Blackburn Merit Award

The Friends School of Baltimore announced the creation of a new merit scholarship program at the school. According to a statement posted on the Friends School website, the Blackburn Merit Award is a $15,000 merit scholarship award for new students applying to the school’s upper elementary fourth and fifth grades. The award is eligible for annual renewal through graduation provided the scholarship recipients maintain good academic and behavioral standing. Students who receive the Blackburn Merit Award must demonstrate superior scholarship and a commitment to the mission and philosophy of the Friends School. Up to three Blackburn Awards will be offered for the 2021-2022 academic year.

The Blackburn Merit Award is named for Louisa Powell Blackburn. Blackburn was the first woman to occupy the head of school position at Friends and was responsible for creating the Friends Nursey School, the forerunner of Friends’ preprimary and lower school.

Founded in 1784, the Friends School of Baltimore is a coeducational Quaker Day School for children in prekindergarten to grade 12. To learn more about the Blackburn Merit Award and other merit scholarship programs offered at the Friends School, visit the school’s website or contact the admission office at 410-649-3200.
