Microscope Makers: Explore the micro-universe around you!
Join microbiologist Dr. Kate Gillespie in our community lab for a workshop introducing Foldscopes! She will instruct on how to build these affordable microscopes, how to use them, and best of all demonstrate different ways you can use them to explore and learn from the universe around you!
Great introductory mini workshop to get busy in the lab working with bacteria and how we can use them for research. Anyone middle-school-aged to adult will enjoy this short hands-on session!
Together we will learn how to build and use a low cost microscope. While we are at it, we can explore the history of “frugal science”, explore different applications for low-cost easy to use microscopes, and discover hands-on in the lab with different samples (bacteria, yeast, algae, fungus etc).
Recommended for ages 11 and up, great for families and friends!
This all takes place in Baltimore’s VERY OWN non-profit community science lab! Baltimore UnderGround Science Space (BUGSS) has been in Highlandtown, Maryland since 2012 aiming to democratize biotechnology and bring people of all backgrounds together to share knowledge and ideas. We are proud to be able to connect our community around the bio-sciences, and bio-arts, and to provide a safe and inclusive environment for all. Please check us out!
