Saturday, April 21 from 10:00am – 3:00pm
We’re partnering with BUGSS (Baltimore Underground Science Space) this April to
show you how your smartphone can do more than keep you up to date on the latest
Spongebob memes. Practice your maker skills in our DIY Smartphone Microscope
workshop! In this workshop, participants will use simple materials like plexiglass,
wood, lenses, nuts and bolts and their own smartphone to make a high-quality
microscope that can magnify objects more than 300-times their natural size. We’ll
provide the building materials, you bring the smartphone. The experts from BUGSS
will lead use through step-by-step building instructions. You’ll then use your new
microscopes to take a look at various microbes, human tissues, and your own cheek
cells. Participants can choose from two different two-hour time slots: once from
10am-12pm and again from 1pm-3pm. Join us to see how you can DIY your own
lab equipment! Cost is $40 per person and includes microscope building materials
(sans smartphone) and museum admission. There is no member discount for our
workshop programs. Anyone under 16 must participate with an adult, who must also register.
