Your Local Library has a Lot to Offer Families

12-22-a-childrens-section-of-the-libraryWhat are your childhood memories of the public library? If you’re thinking quiet, dark and staid, then the children’s sections of today’s Baltimore County Public Library branches will come as a delightful surprise. Some look like thoughtfully designed indoor playgrounds lined with books. Many provide copious, comfortable seating for cuddling up and reading with your child. Teen-only sections give older kids the space they crave.

And the events! Once upon a time, story hours were generally the only family events held at local libraries. Now, a hugely expanded and creative repertoire of ongoing family- and child-oriented events makes a trip to the library that much more fun. There’s crafting, knitting, Legos, hip hop, teen anime and gaming and much, much more. Chances are, these events will allow your child to find at least one meaningful way to connect with others at the library.

But let’s not forget the books. At your local library branch, you’ll find vast collections of books on all subjects and for every age and reading level. Overwhelmed by all the choices? Knowledgeable librarians are ready to assist library patrons young and old.

The library also can be a great place to ease a reluctant reader into the wonderful world of independent reading. Some of our branches offer a special program, Paws to Read, in which you bring to the library your child who may or may not be a confident reader, and the library supplies a patient and loving dog from Pets on Wheels to sit nearby and listen—free of judgment.

So whether you’re a regular at your local library or it’s been a while since you’ve visited, make a point to take your kids during the holidays. They won’t be disappointed. But before you go, check the local branch of your library for dates and hours of operation.
