The Short List

Here are a few things that we are excited about this week:

Alex the Chimp. The Maryland Zoo has a new chimpanzee, Alex, who comes to Baltimore from the Potawatomi Zoo in South Bend, Indiana. He recently completed his 30-day quarantine and has now joined the rest of the chimpanzee troop — he is ready for human visitors, too.

Chimpanzees are classified as endangered species; Commercial logging, agriculture and fires are three factors that affect their habitat. Poaching and disease are other threats. In other words, support conservation and go meet Alex!

Planet Fitness. By now, I hope you have heard that Planet Fitness has invited teens ages 15 to 18 to work out for free this summer. The Teen Summer Challenge starts tomorrow, May 15 and runs through Sept. 1. Free fitness classes also will be available Monday through Friday during this time.

Participating locations are: Aberdeen, Abingdon, Elkton, Forest Hill, Golden Ring, Perry Hall, Towson, Reisterstown, Baltimore City-Inner Harbor, Mondawmin Mall, Alameda, Reisterstown Road, Glen Burnie, Dundalk, Pasadena, Ft. Meade, Reisterstown, Westminster and Catonsville. Teens under 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian at sign-up.

Check it out. It sounds like an amazing program and a great way for kids to get and stay healthy this summer.

Wee Chic. This Green Spring Station store full of trendy togs and cool toys is celebrating its 10th anniversary. Hats off to this boutique!

“Queens Girl in the World.” Starring Dawn Ursula, who originated the role in D.C. and won a Helen Hayes Award, this play tells the story of a young African American woman in Queens in the 1960s. Its sequel, “Queens Girl in Africa” opens this week, both at Everyman Theatre. Here’s our review of the first show, which makes for a perfect moms’ night out. It’s also great for teens and young adults. I took my college-aged daughter and she loved it.

Biscuits! Today, May 14, is National Biscuit Day. But you could probably celebrate with a flour-filled tribute, and maybe even some gravy, any old day this week.
